Sekondi-Takoradi Mayor Charged

He has also assigned the police in the area to check unauthorized parking of vehicles on the roads to help ensure free vehicular flow in the city.

According to the Regional Minister, the metropolis had hither-to been one of the cleanest in Ghana which had purposeful environmental management, and therefore had no problem with sanitation.

‘But the current situation is the reverse. We must do something about it now before it gets out of hand. The strategic approach is to get the Takoradi Market Circle area decongested’, the Regional Minister asserted.

Some residents in the metropolis have blamed the city authorities for being responsible for the incessant springing up of unauthorized structures in the area without recourse to any building regulations.

According to them, some of the unauthorized structures were being constructed on waterways, causing flooding during the raining season and destroying the mangrove vegetation which had implications for the   eco-system. They alleged that the assembly had failed to enforce the laws.

Addressing the media in Sekondi yesterday, the Western Regional Minister pointed out that if by May 31, 2014, the assembly was unable to decongest the Takoradi Market Circle, the Regional Coordinating Council would move in to offer the needed support.

Asked whether he had lost confidence in the Sekondi-Takoradi Mayor, Mr. Paul Evans Aidoo, who doubles as the Member of Parliament for Sefwi Wiawso, answered in the negative.

‘The STMA has put in place measures to utilize the Apremdo market near Takoradi by decongesting the Market Circle. The RCC has no compromise on this. Once this is done, we create a stream of economic activities between the Apremdo market and the city centre’, he added.

He continued, ‘All foodstuff vendors are to be relocated to Apremdo market. The implication is that there would be less traffic congestion in the city centre and there would be a new vehicular flow system between Apremdo and the city centre that would eventually create opportunities for commercial drivers and other commuters’.

The purpose of the Regional Minister’s meeting with journalists was to create a platform for the people to participate in setting the development agenda, implementing and monitoring same, without the different persuasions.

He told journalists in the region that they owed it a duty to promote positive debate that could constructively engender the area’s development.

‘We have a lot of issues we need to dialogue on to move this region forward and here I want to observe that our press has constantly turned its attention to one issue, that is oil and gas’, he alleged.

According to him, there were many things that the media could talk about instead of concentrating on oil and gas adding. ‘there are areas such as agriculture, forestry, illegal mining and its associated effects on the environment’.
