The Global Cervical Charity Foundation, a Kumasi-based health NGO, in collaboration with the National Catholic Health Secretariat, has organised a programme for 165 women in the Atwima-Nwabiagya District, to screen them for cervical and breast cancer, as part of activities to commemorate this year’s Mothers Day.
The exercise, which took place at Kufour Camp in the Atwima-Nwabiagya District, was organised with funding from unibank Ghana Ltd.
It brought together women from 19 communities in the district such as Bayerebon No 4, Kufour Camp, Tano-Dumasi, Gyereso and Anansu.
After the exercise, those who had signs of cancer were referred to health facilities for further investigation.
Speaking at a durbar that preceded the screening, the Chief Executive Officer of the Global Cervical Charity Foundation, Mrs Juana Nyame, explained that since cervical cancer posed a great threat to all women, there was the need for intensive advocacy programmes.
She described the current advocacy of the issue of breast and cervical cancer as low, and called for intensive efforts to educate the people on the disease, for the needed action.
Mrs Nyame appealed to women to make breast and cervical cancer screening one of their priorities, and urged young girls to avoid early sex since it was one of the main causes of cervical cancer.
The Parish Priest of the Saint Matthew Catholic Parish at Kufour Camp, Rev. Father Prince Charles Ofori, in his welcome address, commended the NGO for its initiative and appealed to parents to make the proper upbringing of their children their priority and ensure that they assisted them to attain education or learn a trade for them to make a living in future.
