Two luxury buses, full of fans of 4Kids Channel of the MultiTv Network last weekend embarked on a field trip to Mountain Afadjato in the Afadjato South District of the Volta Region.

The 4Kids Channel Manager, Nana Yaa Sarpong, in a predeparture message said the sponsored trip was part of the package for the winners of the channels’ ‘2014 Basic Schools Essay Competition’.

She said the trip was also to expose the children to the country’s eco-tourists sites to help them develop a partnership with nature ‘by which they would appreciate the need to protect it.’

Ms Sarpong said the 4Kids Channel had set itself to fulfil its mission of educating, informing and entertaining viewers through its best of programmes and activities.

The Channel Manager also commended parents for allowing their children to be part of the expedition to the Liate -Wote community where Mountain Afadjato and Tabo Waterfalls are located.

The Linguist of the Liate-Wote community, Togbe Wilson Kofi Osei, in his welcome address said the origional Ewe name for Afadjato was ‘Ava Dza To’ which literally means ‘war against a skin itching plant’.

Tobge Wilson continued that volunteers with great determination had to ignore any effects of body contacts with the itching plant which grew extensively on the mountain to move through the plants to drive out the wild animals far from their community to ensure their safety.

Togbe Wilson Kofi Osei said the mountain is 2905ft(888m) and it takes up to 45minutes on average to climb up to its summit where one has a clear view of the Akosombo Dam and beyond as well as some Togolese communities.

The Communications Manager for the Liate-Wote Eco-Tourism Project, Johnatan Kuma Gavi said the project was started in 1990 as a community supported project.

He continued that funding for the project comes mainly from charges received from tourists who visit the community to climb up the mountain or the fall and occasional remittances from natives in the Diasporas.

Mr Kuma Gavi appealed to the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Arts and other interest groups to assist to develop the area further by providing   wider trails to help tourists ascend or descend the mountain safely.

The Communication Manager also appealed to the government to speed up work on the construction of the road from Accra leading to Liate-Wote to make the area more accessible to more tourists.
