Tigo Ghana Sponsors The 2nd West Africa Microfinance Conference


AwakeAfrica/Accra: Tigo Ghana, one of the leading telecommunication and mobile money service providers in Ghana sponsors the 2nd West Africa Microfinance Conference (WAMIC) to be held in Accra from June 23 to 24, 2014 at the Accra International Conference Centre.

Tigo Ghana has the highest volume of mobile money users in Ghana and has been adjudged the “Best Mobile Money Product in West Africa” at the 2013 Kalahari Awards in Lagos, Nigeria. As of November 2012, the company recorded about GH¢ 11 million transactions on its mobile money platform (Tigo Cash) daily and has approximately 3.75 million registered subscribers, equivalent to 30% of its total customer base.

The two-day conference which is being organized by The African Centre for Peace Building (AFCOPB) and powered Senyo Global Solutions is under the theme “Reducing Extreme Poverty through Microfinance”. It brings togetherexperts in the microfinance sector, ICT, Telcos, Media, Civil societies, academia, rural and community banks, investors, policy makers and legislators to share knowledge and information on the best practices in the field and how the sector can be improved to meet its original objectives.

“The 2014 WAMIC will also assemble high profile personalities to have an in-death discussion into the challenges in the microfinance sector and finding practical solutions to them. It will also present an opportunity to develop a road map to a legislative framework for the sector” Korsi Senyo, Executive Director, AFCOPB said.

“The issues facing the microfinance sector calls for a collective efforts and responsibility as it affects not only MFI operators and their clients but pose a threat to national security. This is why we (AFCOPB) as a peace-building organization whose basic aim is to solve some of the basic problem that might have otherwise acted as agent of conflict, wish to champion public awareness on this matter” Korsi Senyo added.

The conference, organizers say is open to Leaders and staff of Microfinance companies; Saving and Loan companies, Banks and other Non-bank financial institutions; Civil societies, NGOs and Media; IT companies, Development agencies; Government department and anyone having the desire to enter into the microfinance business.
