President of Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF) Ben Nunoo Mensah has revealed that his outfit has targeted 200 members and not less than 30 coaches nationwide by the close of this year.

He pointed out that the decision forms part of the Federation’s quest to put the sport in a position to compete with football in the country soon.

At the launch of the National Coaches Development Structure Program in Accra yesterday, the GWF chief expressed the hope that the presence of Course Director and Project Expert Dr Kyle Calhoum Pierce will help push the sport a notch higher.

‘This initiative started as a dream. We met in Kenya and after talks I told him we will love to host him. I’m told wherever he goes weightlifting shoots up, having succeeded in many African countries,’ said Nunoo-Mensah.

He added, ‘We are happy for two reasons- the large presence of security personnel here falls within the Federation’s objectives, and also the fact that participants will finish the course empowered to impart to others nationwide.’

The Course Director, who will be in the country for three months, told participants that he would be available to all members at all times during his stay and promised to give his best shot.

Acting Director General, National Sports Authority (NSA), Madam Alice Attipoe urged the participants to make good use of the opportunity to upgrade themselves.

Participants will be taken through physiology of sport and exercise, biomechanics of sport and exercise, Foundations of Sport and Exercise, Psychology, Essentials of Strength and Conditioning in Weightlifting, Fitness for all Sports, Strength and Conditioning for Young Athletes, Science and Application.

The training, code named ‘Training of the trainers’, is being sponsored by the Olympic Solidarity through the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC).
