Garbage clearance in Accra metro at slow pace

Garbage has piled up in parts of the Accra metropolis, particularly at markets and lorry stations.

Areas such as the Tema Station, a major lorry terminal, the Agbogbloshie Market, parts of Abossey Okai, the central business district (CBD) of Accra, Kantamanto, the Kaneshie Market, among others, are engulfed in filth.

The situation is attributed to a power outage at Kpone and its environs which affected the operations of the Kpone Landfill site some days ago.

The Executive Secretary of the Environmental Services Providers Association, Ms Ama Ofori-Antwi, told the Daily Graphic that the weighing bridge at the landfill site could, therefore, not be used, for which reason many trucks carrying solid waste from all over Accra were unable to dump the waste.

In addition to that, the operator, Waste LandFills Company Limited, took a break on May, 1, 2014, making it impossible for solid waste contractors to dump, creating a backlog in Accra and other parts of the Greater Accra Region that depended on the Kpone Landfill for the final disposal of their solid waste.

According to Ms Ofori-Antwi, some of the contractors are now working to clear the backlog.

A visit to the Tema Station and the CBD yesterday, however, showed that some of the garbage had been cleared. However, there was still a pile of it at the exit of the station and also around the central container site where traders dispose of their solid waste.
