Speaking yesterday at Channels TV, the governor of Akwa Ibom State, Godswill Akpabio, touched upon the controversies surrounding the abduction of more than 230 Chibok girls.
The governor, who has 4 children, all girls, said: “I am not sleeping well and I don’t expect any Nigerian parent to sleep well until those girls are back”.
He urged the Nigerians to focus on the main aim, which is to rescue the abducted girls and commended the military and security bodies for their work.
Meanwhile Akpabio dwelt on some facts, which have arisen questions recently: why “the daughters of the principal and female teachers in the school were not kidnapped”, why Boko Haram claimed responsibility only in 3 weeks, why there was no shooting (“that has not been the practice in the past”) although some girls were trying to escape (and managed).
The governor also found it strange that soon after somebody said in the media that the girls were been sold for N2, 000, Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau “came out on CNN and YouTube and said I am going to sell your girls”.
Akpabio commended Nigerian authorities for accepting help in the rescue operation from the United States, explaining that “it is not easy as the Giant of Africa for us to accept that we have a big problem and we need the assistance of major powers“.
According to the Akwa Ibom governor, this decision by Goodluck Jonathan shows “humility on the part of the president that it is time for us to accept any assistance from anywhere”.
