Suicide Bomber Trained By Boko Haram On Why He Refused to Carry Out Sect’s Assignments

Trained by Boko Haram suicide bomber who attempted to blow up a divisional police headquarters in Damaturu, Yobe State capital last Sunday, May 4, confessed that he was recruited only four months ago.

The suicide bomber, 19-year-old Abubakar Sadiq Umar, stated that his suicide mission was to go to Damaturu, find A Division and trigger off the bomb.

According to him, he came to Damaturu together with a person who guided him as Umar has never been in Damaturu before. The guide took him to the police headquarters (A Division) and asked him to press the remote to trigger off the bomb.

But, Umar didn’t accomplished his mission as he was worried that he could kill innocent people. “My worry is that why should I kill myself and other innocent people?” he said.

Umar also added that there were two pick-up vans for two separate suicide missions, but he wasn’t informed about the final destination of the second van.

The investigation has revealed that the bomber was recruited in Maiduguri four months ago and taken to the Sambisa forest where he was trained as a terrorist.

According to a police bomb expert from the anti-bomb squad of the state police command, Mohammed Danladi, explosion of he explosive-laden van could have created great havoc.

Danladi, an inspector, explained that the capacity of the explosives revealed that it was the largest consignment ever recovered from any terrorist since the commencement of the insurgency, adding that it would have been devastating and affected about 500 meter radius within the town, had the bomb exploded.

The state Commissioner of Police, Sanusi Rufai, said that Umar would be handed over to the Joint Task Force (JTF) for further interrogation.
