Rashid Sumaila Sundown’s edge closer to PSL record

Black Stars defender Rashid Sumaila’s club side, Mamelodi Sundowns can move to 10 successive wins and within one of matching the Premier Soccer League record if they win their derby against SuperSport United tonight.

That would mean if they can add a final victory for the season away at Maritzburg United on Saturday, they will tie their own Absa Premiership record.

Seven years ago Sundowns romped to the league title under Gordon Igesund on the back of 11 successive wins, starting in January 2007 with a 4-0 win over AmaZulu and ending near the end of April when Silver Stars beat them 2-0 away.

In between Sundowns were victorious over Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Moroka Swallows in successive matches for a hat-trick of success against the ‘Soweto big three’.

This year Sundowns have won nine on the trot since beating AmaZulu at the start of March up to and including their last success over Moroka Swallows some 10 days ago.

Along the way they have also beaten Polokwane City, Free State Stars, Platinum Stars, University of Pretoria, Kaizer Chiefs, Bloemfontein Celtic and Mpumalanga Black Aces and Swallows.

They host SuperSport in the Tshwane derby where a win would also see them crowned league champions. Story by Ghana/Joy Sports
