The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Odododiodoo Constituency, Mr Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, has made a cash donation of GH¢10,000 to support the construction of a three-unit classroom block for the people of James Town in Accra.
Mr Vanderpuye, also the Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, presented 100 bags of cement to the Accra Central branch of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, which is spearheading the projects.
Speaking at the donation ceremony in Accra, the MP said the donation was in fulfilment of a promise he made to the church after its leadership had asked him for support.
“I was extremely excited when I heard the news that the James Town branch of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana is embarking on the construction of a school block for the people. I, therefore, thought it wise as the MP for the area to support the church to complete the project,” he said.
Mr Vanderpuye observed that since the future of every nation rested on education, there was the need for a conducive environment to be created to enhance teaching and learning and added that his main aim was to contribute towards the development of the constituency.
He, therefore, assured the residents of James Town and the rest of the communities in his constituency that he would ensure social and infrastructural development for their benefit.
The Minister in charge at the Accra Central branch of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rev. Joyman Borketey, who received the donation, thanked the MP and gave an assurance that the money and items would be used for its intended purpose.
He said the church had the vision not only to provide spiritual growth for the people of James Town but also provide quality education for children of the town.
“Most of the children in James Town are on the street and at the beach. As a church, we think it is time to address these situations by constructing a school that will provide good education for these children,” Mr Borketey said.
He added that since education was empowerment, the leadership of the church thought it wise to consult the MP to support the building of the classroom blocks for the residents of James Town.
Mr Borketey, therefore, called on other corporate institutions to provide support for the construction of the classroom block.
