Members of the youth wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Northern Regional capital, Tamale are seething with rage over the manner in which the police are handling the case in which some of their colleagues were shot ahead of the recent National Delegates’ Congress of the party.
They have therefore appealed to the chief of the area to prevail the Inspector-General Police (IGP), Mohammed Alhassan, to help to bring the perpetrators of the dastardly act to book.
In a statement, the Young Elephants Association (YEA) of Tamale said, ‘It has been over two weeks since the shooting of nine innocent members of the New Patriotic Party occurred and till date nothing has been heard about the Police Service actively pursuing the perpetrators of this brutal act.
‘Indeed, the Young Elephants Association of Tamale is reliably informed that the Police Service have completed the investigations into who committed this act, but are unwilling to arrest the leader of the gang that committed this offence – all because he is neck-deep in the stable of the National Democratic Congress’, Chairman of the Association, Abdul Jalil Bawa, indicated.
The youth therefore noted on authority, ‘The Police Service is refusing to pick up one Yakubu Iddrisu, alias ‘Oparipa,’ who, through their investigations, has been identified as the prime suspect for the shooting incident.’
The Young Elephants Association has since taken the IGP to task to ensure the arrest of the perpetrators of the shooting incident that rocked Tamale on the eve of the Congress.
As a country that believes in the rule of law, the group pointed out, ‘such acts of gross impunity cannot be overlooked and we are calling on the Police Service to implement the contents of the investigative report they commissioned into the Tamale shooting incident.’
Charge
The statement intimated, ‘We also wish to remind the Inspector-General of Police that we are still waiting for the arrest of the persons involved in the burning of 27 houses belonging to NPP sympathisers in Tamale, which occurred on 17 February, 2009.’
This, they said, was because ’till date, not a single soul has been arrested, as evidence linking the persons who committed this act is available.’
Apart from that, the youth group said, ‘We also await the arrest of the perpetrators of the gruesome murders of three traders and workers in the Agbogbloshie market in 2009 – Alhassan Fuseini from Tamale; Soale from Yendi and Sule J.Y from Tolon, by persons close to the NDC, including one Sule, Sahana Mohammed Ayatu, Awal Voulina Naa, Sule Nabiya, Abdalla Say and Abdalla Rasta.’
They recalled with nostalgia, the murder of their colleague, Nasiru Mohammed, on March 11, 2014, which they asserted was still pending without any arrests; and therefore charged the police to be truthful to their motto of ‘Service with Integrity’ and not be seen to be doing the bidding of any political party.
