“Politicization Affecting Performance Of Workers”—CLOGSAG

The Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) has hinted that politicization of the civil and local government services were negatively affecting the effectiveness and productivity of workers in the country.

This was contained in the association’s 2014 May Day message, signed by Mr Isaac Bampo Addo, the Executive Secretary, and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Koforidua on Wednesday.

According to the statement, politicization as one of nefarious strategies being adopted by employers to intimidate and divide the ranks of workers in the civil and local government services was worrying.

It said the menace of politicization stemmed from the fact that it hit at human rights and denied sections of the society the opportunity to participate fully in national development.

“instead of the government giving opportunity to all staff based on experience and technical competence, it rather tends to be choosy and mostly relies on political followers and those who pay lip service to the government,” the statement disclosed.

The statement asserted that the sort of multi-party democracy being exercised in the country was being discriminatory, stressing that, it breached the 1992 Constitution “since after elections the party in power forgets that the government is for all.”

It expressed worry that the politicization which was finding its way into the civil and local government services was creating undue tension and polarizing the various offices.

According to the statement, political heads had usurped both administrative and political powers in the services such that they assign positions, transfer, suspend and dismiss staff without recourse to laid procedures and norms.

It said that politicization was gradually grinding to halt vital institutions within the civil and local government services.

“The government machinery at both the central and local levels are not being properly fueled to support the growth of the economy whereas more resources are channeled to newly created institutions or bodies that are mere replications,” it stated.

The statement therefore called for a greater attention to improve the performance of the civil and local government services.

It also entreated that every worker be given the opportunity to contribute their quota to achieve the objects of the services without let or hindrance.
