NO POWER, NO PAY: 15 Days Without Electricity – No N750 Fixed Charge, FG Rules Out

With effect from today, May 1st 2014, Nigerians who experienced power outage for 15 days in one month would no longer be required to pay the N750 monthly fixed charge to their respective distribution companies.

Speaking yesterday before the press in Abuja,Ā Chairman, Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, Dr. Sam Amadi, explained that the Commission has looked into complaints from electricity consumers who were forced to pay the charge without enjoying proper power supply.

“On considerations of these complaints by the consumers, and considering the role of NERC in Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry, NESI, the commission, as provided under Section 32d, and Section 32f of the EPSR Act 2005, hereby order that effective May 1, 2014, where any customer of a distribution licensee has not received electricity supply for a period of 15 days in a month, such a customer shall not be required to pay fixed charge,” the directive read.

Dr. Amadi specifically stressed that the order stands provided the disruption is not due to non-payment of electricity bills, or tampering with electricity infrastructure, vandalism, or is unrelated to the fault of the distribution company.
