Jazz legend Peter White to headline maiden Stanbic Jazz festival


Renowned Jazz musician, Peter White will be the star performer of the maiden edition of the Stanbic Ghana Jazz festival to be held on May 9th and 10th at the Labadi Beach hotel.

Born in Luton, England, White first gained fame with his distinctive guitar style as accompanist to Al Stewart.

Peter White’s songs “What Does It Take (To Win Your Love)”, recorded by Jr. Walker & The All Stars (2006), “Midnight In Manhattan”, recorded by Grover Washington, Jr. (1998), and “Bright” (2009) all reached number one on the Billboard Jazz Songs chart.

The festival which in collaboration with Smooth Jazz Ghana and Live FM will also feature celebrated Ghanaian musicians like Ofie Kodjoe, Oli Silk, Aka Blay and many others.

The Jazz fusion guitarist, Peter White, known for his unique blend of jazz and pop will be backed by a local band to entertain the audience.

Speaking at the launch, Head of Marketing and Communication at Stanbic Ghana, Mawuko Afadzinu said as a bank known for supporting arts and culture, the festivalis to promote jazz music in Ghana.

“Jazz is at the heart of this country and every important music genre in this country has traces of jazz in it so this is our contribution toward the promotion of a very important music genre in this country” he added.

Mr Afadzinu said through the festival, local musicians will have the opportuninty to do collaborations with international jazz artistes because “the cross-pollination of ideas will be very useful to the development and growth of the local jazz industry”.

He indicated that the ultimate aim is to nurture and promote the development of both the visual and performing arts, to be able to provide employment, training and skills development in all the related fields of technical production, including sound engineering, lighting, marketing and public relations, event management and hospitality.

The Head of Markerting and Communications observed that as a customer-centered bank, the Jazz festival is also to make sure their customers have a quality relaxation period.

Mawuko Afadzinu was optimistic the Stanbic Bank Ghana Jazz Festival will be one of the events on the global jazz calendar.
