Police tasked to arrest sponsors of land guards

The Police Administration has directed all regional police commands to arrest the sponsors of land guards and ensure the disbandment of those guards with all the seriousness it deserves.

A statement issued by the Public Affairs Directorate of the Ghana Police Service noted with concern the disturbing pockets of land-guard activities in the country, especially in the Greater Accra Region.

“This act of lawlessness and indiscipline on the part of individuals who, under the guise of protecting their lands, mobilise young men and resource them with all kinds of offensive weapons to cause mayhem and terrorise innocent people immensely undermines law and order,” it said. Warning

It warned that the raising of any armed force in the country was the prerogative of Parliament, as stipulated in the 1992 Constitution that “A person shall not raise an armed force except by or under the authority of an Act of Parliament.”

“Henceforth, the Police Administration shall consider any acts of landguardism as serious crime and deal with them accordingly,” it added. Public

The statement advised the public to seek redress on any piece of land in dispute at the relevant land management institution, such as the Land Title Registry or the Office of the Administrator of Stool Lands, or take civil action at the law courts for redress.

It added that in cases of trespassing, which constitutes a criminal offence, a complaint could be lodged with the police for the necessary action, instead of people taking the law into their own hands.

A number of suspected land guards killed one person and injured three others at Adentan last Saturday.
