New school block inaugurated at Darkuman-Kokompe

A three-storey 18-unit classroom block has been inaugurated by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) at Darkuman-Kokompe in Accra.

Being the fifth to be inaugurated out of the eight millennium city schools built by the AMA so far, the Odorkor Salleria Cluster of Schools is meant to augment the efforts of the assembly to abolish the shift system in public schools in the metropolis.

The GH¢800,000 edifice, funded by the AMA through its social investment fund, has computer and science laboratories,  washrooms,  a store and a staff common room.

The inauguration attracted directors of education in the metropolis, teachers and head teachers, students, government officials, the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Ablekuma North Constituency and a delegation from the Columbia State, South Carolina in the USA.

  Accra Mayor
Addressing the function before a tour of the facility, the Metropolitan Chief Executive of the AMA, Dr Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, said the assembly was poised to end the shift system in schools.

To this end, he said 100 classroom blocks were under construction and would be completed in the shortest possible time, and added that a sod- cutting ceremony would be performed  next month for the commencement of yet another facility.

  Partnership with Columbia State
The Mayor stated that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) had been signed between the AMA and the Columbia State for a partnership agreement in the areas of training and best practices in tax collection and housing.

According to him, the AMA annually runs an exchange programme for its assembly members in partnership with the Columbia State as part of the MoU.

He added that staff of the assembly together with some teachers usually travelled to the USA for exchange programmes.

  MP for Ablekuma
The MP for the Ablekuma North Constituency, Mr Justice Joe Appiah, pledged to donate 20 desktop computers and build a modern library for the school.

Mr Appiah advised the teachers and students to take good care of the facility to ensure that it lasted for generations yet unborn.

The Mayor of the Columbia State, South Carolina in the USA, Mr Steve Benjamin, called on the children to study hard, adding that “you can do anything you want through education.”

Mr Benjamin reiterated his government’s commitment to assisting Ghana in the area of development.
