Cash Shortage Hampers Reconstruction Of Gabusu’s House

The residence was vandalized when violence broke out on 11 June, 2012 between the Gbi people and the Zongo community in Hohoe. Vehicles and other properties in the house were also set ablaze. After several discussions and interventions, a committee was set up as part of a peace process which also involved the reconstruction of the residence.

As a result, early this year, the immediate past Volta Regional Minister, Nii Laryea Afotey-Agbo, cut the sod for work to start. A few months after, the contractor, William Chidiak of CW Construction Limited has told the new Regional Minister, Hellen Adwoa Ntoso that ‘money is problematic.’

He said despite many setbacks, he had so far kept his side of the deal and was poised to stick to the schedule yet, ‘money is not forthcoming,’ even though he had issued the certificate for job done so far.

‘I have issued my first certificate, yet we have not heard anything from my clients (government)’, he said. That notwithstanding, he assured that the project was on course except that he feared the bureaucracies and delays associated with the release of funds could extend the completion schedule.

Earlier, Togbega Gabusu urged government to as a matter of urgency, relocate the Hohoe Midwifery Training School. He said the school, despite its contribution to healthcare in the country and great potential, is land-locked and unable to expand and develop to meet emerging challenges.

He also urged government to expedite action in acquiring the land on the proposed site for the Hohoe Campus of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) to prevent encroachment.

Togbega also complained about the delay in starting the Have-Hohoe-Jasikan portion of the Eastern Corridor Roads and pleaded that the design of the road be made available to the chiefs to help them plan accordingly.

He also appealed to government to situate one of the 200 Senior High Schools (SHSs) promised by the President in his traditional area.

In a response, the Regional Minister, Hellen Ntoso, said she would make a follow-up on the findings and update the chiefs appropriately. She said Hohoe could get an SHS after the first batch of 200 schools. She agreed to the relocation of the Hohoe midwifery, but called for patience and time to work on the appropriate modalities

The Acting President of the Council and Nifahene of Buem, Nana Opraw Akuamoah urged the Minister to work in the interest of the region, particularly the less developed northern Volta.
