Dr. Kwame Kyei
Dr. Kwame Kyei, chief executive officer of Unity Group of Companies, has picked an award as the best Petroleum and Gas Entrepreneur of the Year 2013 during the fourth edition of the Ghana Entrepreneur Awards function held at the Banquet Hall, State House, last Friday.
The fourth chapter of the 2013 Entrepreneur Awards programme was organised by the Entrepreneurs Foundation of Ghana (EFG) on the theme: ‘The role of the Public Private Partnership (PPP) in National Development.’
The institution of the award was informed by the need to create awareness in entrepreneurship among members of the public as a way of stimulating growth of local brands and eventually creating employment opportunities.
In all, 30 entrepreneurs in various fields of business were honoured with plaques and citations at the ceremony.
Unity Oil attracted the award because of its good and quality services in the petroleum and gas industry – a feat attributable to the CEO, Dr. Kwame Kyei, who has carved a niche for himself in the industry in the past years.
Unity Oil has registered phenomenal growth since its inception and attracted the attention of industry watchers over the years. This, coupled with its consistent development of new products, has earned it respect and increasing patronage.
The company and its CEO have maintained a cordial relationship with motorists – a relationship that has ensured its progress over the years.
Dr. Kyei dedicated his award to his wife, family, all motorists and drivers.
An elated Kyei, soon after the honour, advised the youth to wait for God’s time, and to work hard since hard work brings success.
Unity Oil has a workforce of 1,200. The businessman entered the oil and gas business in the early 90s, registering important feats that have earned him dozens of awards.
Dr. Kyei started it all in 1995 when he established his first petroleum product retail outlet at Taifa, Accra, and became a dealer for the Ghana Oil Company Ltd. (GOIL) selling at a commission.
From this humble beginning he steadily expanded the business and was granted an Oil Marketing Licence by the National Petroleum Authority, leading to the establishment of Unity Oil Company Ltd in 2002.
The company currently owns and operates a network of over 30 petroleum product retail outlets across the country.
Dr. Kyei is also the owner of Light 94.9 Fm, a first class radio station, Light Television in Kumasi, Sports Hotel Ltd., Pravda 93.5 Fm in Accra and Unicom Security Services Ltd., a private security firm.
He is also a director and shareholder of Dome Energy Resources Ltd., a bulk oil distributing company in Ghana.
In 2010, Dr. Kyei received an Honorary Doctor of Services and Development degree from the International Ministerial Council of Europe – an affiliate of the University of Copenhagen, Denmark – in recognition of his selfless leadership and for his extraordinary contribution to business and development.
