SOME 22 Junior High School (JHS) graduates who excelled in the 2013 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the Berekum Municipality have been awarded.

The 22, currently in Senior High School (SHS), received certificates, textbooks and unspecified amount of money at a special award ceremony dubbed ‘Patrons of Berekum Academic Award for Best JHS Graduates’ held in Berekum last Thursday.

Patrons of Berekum is a non-partisan social organisation of a group of eminent Berekum citizens resident in Accra.

Addressing the beneficiaries, Professor Daniel Obeng-Ofori, Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) and member of the group, explained that the award scheme was instituted to promote education in the Berekum Municipality and the nation at large.

The annual award scheme, according to him, started four years ago in their efforts to encourage students to learn extra hard to excel in the basic examination.

The Member of Parliament for Berekum East, Dr Kwabena Twum-Nuamah, advised the award-winners to focus on their education and not allow themselves to be swayed by bad friends in their respective schools.

The MP urged them to continue to excel in their academic pursuit so that the honour given them would not be a nine-day wonder.

He commended members of Patrons of Berekum for constituting the academic award scheme which he said would go a long way to encourage students to step up their academic performance in order to also benefit from it.

Opoku Boakye-Yiadom, Berekum Municipal Chief Executive, on behalf of the chiefs and people of Berekum, thanked the organisers for the novelty.

The MCE charged the awardees to take members of the group as their mentors so as to be challenged to aspire to greater heights.

He appealed to Patrons of Berekum to help in educational infrastructure development in the Municipality.

The Berekum Municipal Director of Education and chairman for the occasion, Julius Peprah Boateng, advised parents to take the education of their wards seriously, so as to give them a brighter future.

Members of Patrons of Berekum include Prof Kwame Kyere, energy specialist; Prof Kwasi Ansu-Kyeremeh, communication specialist; Kofi Kyere, electrical engineer; C.S Asante, educationist; Dr Stephen Benneh, medical doctor; Nana Owusu Nsiah, former IGP; Sam Owusu, geologist; Dr K.
