Mobile phone thief jailed 45 years

A 20-year-old unemployed, Baffour Awuah, has been sentenced to 45 years in prison with hard labour by a Kumasi Circuit Court for robbing a man of his mobile phone worth GH¢40 and GH¢70 cash.

Awuah, alias School Boy, pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy and robbery and was convicted on his own plea by the court, presided over by Mr William Boampng.

His accomplice, only known as Bontele, is, however, on the run.

Awuah and his accomplice demanded GH¢1 from their victim to buy Indian hemp and when he declined, they pulled a knife on him, searched his pockets and took the mobile phone and the money.

Facts
Presenting the facts, Inspector Gulliver Kwabena Tenkorang told the court that on April 18, this year, the complainant, who is a clerk with the Produce Buying Company in Tarkwa, was travelling to Ejura to visit his sick mother.

He said on reaching Kumasi, the complainant made a stopover at the Neoplan station and decided to buy food at a spot opposite the station. It was there that Awuah and his accomplice invited him to join them.

Inspector Tenkorang said they demanded GH¢1 to buy Indian hemp and when the complainant declined, they forcibly took the money and the phone from his pocket.

According to the prosecution, the complainant pursued them but Awuah and his accomplice brought out a knife and threatened to stab him if he dared got near them.

Inspector Tenkorang said it took the assistance of a taxi driver and the Asokwa Police patrol team to arrest Awuah, but his accomplice managed to escape.

When Awuah was searched, the mobile phone was found on him but without the chip.

During investigations, Awuah told the police that Bontele took the cash, while he (Awuah) kept the phone.
