Calm returns to Legon campus; chaos forces authorities to allow students to write exams

Authorities of the University of Ghana, Legon, have allowed the over five hundred students, who were earlier prevented from writing an entrance exams to do so.

This was after the aggrieved students caused chaos on the campus for being denied to access the examination centre although they had paid the requisite registration fee for the exams.

Displeased students told Joy News, they registered for the exams online at a fee of GH¢130.00, but arrived at the examination centre only to be informed that they would not be allowed to write their papers because they failed to pay GH¢300 as tuition for the entrance examination classes.

Although the exams was scheduled to start at 10:00am on Saturday, as at 12:00 midday it had not started.

Dr. Badu Nyarko, Deputy Director of the Institute of Continuing and Distance Education at the University of Ghana, Legon, admitted in an interview with Joy News that the confusion on the campus prompted a decision to allow the students to sit for the exams.

He, however, explained that “the university through the Institute of Continuing and Distance Education advertised that only those, who will attend our entrance exams classes will be permitted to write the entrance examinations — and it was boldly advertised in the dailies, both Graphic and Times”.

He said the university had taken the decision not to allow the students to sit for the exams because “there were people, who were also organizing classes outside what we had stipulated, and these people were going round telling the students who were participating in these exams that they have connections with the university, and that they can influence their admissions, when they write their examinations”.

According to Dr. Nyarko, when students, who attend those classes that have not been approved by the university, fail, they are likely to conclude that the university had collected their money and has failed to pass them.

“And so we had an integrity as a university to protect”, he asserted, further adding that “from next year we have to look at another alternative”.
