Father, daughter trapped to death by collapsing building

A father and his four-year-old daughter were crushed to death last Tuesday when portions of their weak and dilapidated building collapsed on them at Aninkromah, near Barekuma in the Atwima Nwabiagya District in the Ashanti Region.

The collapse of the antique mud house occurred around 10.30 p.m. last Tuesday during a downpour which was preceded by strong winds.

It also resulted in injury to the man’s five-month pregnant wife, Adwoa Buor, 24.

The bodies of the man, Kofi Boateng, 28, and his daughter, Maame Pokua, have been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), while Buor is recuperating at the same hospital from a broken thigh.

Mysteriously, Maame Frema, a two-year-old daughter of the couple, escaped unhurt, a mystery which the people of the town are yet to come to terms with.

Strangely, however, other people are still living in the remaining structure which, from all indications, could collapse at any time.

According to those occupants, they have nowhere to put up.

Briefing the Daily Graphic at the family house of Boateng, his uncle and co-tenant, Mr Kwame Kyeremeh, said he had heard a loud bang around 10.30 p.m. during the downpour and was woken up by shouts for help.

He said he woke up to realise that the room adjacent to his had collapsed but because there was a power outage in the community, it was difficult to find both the dead and the living.

According to Mr Kyeremeh, who is popularly known in the area as Kwame Sheikh, in rescuers’ bid to dig where they could hear noise from the rubble, they unfortunately heaped the debris on Maame Pokua due to the darkness in the area.
