The National Youth Authority has said it plans to organise a National Youth Entrepreneurship Competitions which shall seek to award young entrepreneurs with viable business proposals from every region in Ghana.
The competition will crown a number of youth entrepreneurship and jobs bootcamps to be held in Accra, Ho, Bolga and Tamale this year.
This was announced by deputy director of the National Youth Authority Peter Otokunor at a Youth Dialogue Forum held at the University of Ghana last Wednesday.
He said the competition forms part of its implementation of the National Youth Policy.
Explaining the mandate of the NYA, Otokunor said the Authoirty has settled on three-pronged perspectives to expand economic opportunities for youth. These are promoting youth entrepreneurship, skills and leadership training, Funding opportunities and volunteerism.
The National Youth Authority (NYA) formally National Youth Council (NYC) is a statutory body established by the Government of Ghana in 1974 by NRCD 241 to co-ordinate and facilitate youth development activities in the country. The intention behind its formation was that the NYA should serve as the umbrella institution of all state organisations responsible for youth development.
But its impact has been considered by many as limited. Youth and especially graduate unemployment continues to be a major headache affecting Ghana.
Last year some Upper Regional youths threatened to demonstrate over abandoned Rice factory, Meat Processing factory at Bolgatanga and the Northern Star Tomato Processing Factory, at Pwalugu which has been closed down due to lack of raw materials.
