Five out of six giant buildings have been constructed at Sokode Lokoe, the permanent site for the University of Health and Allied Sciences in the Ho Municipality of the Volta Region.
The construction which began in August 2013 is being executed by Yanjian Group a Chinese Technical team at the cost of 36 million cedis.
The University is one of the government’s priority projects promised the people of the Volta Region with Campuses in Ho and Hohoe.
The government however, came under immense pressure from some residents due to delay in executing the project.
A temporary facility was subsequently constructed at the premises of the Volta Regional Hospital for the commencement of the University.
Myjoyonline can confirm that five out of the six structures are currently under construction and near completion. The structures include lecture halls, auditorium, multi-purpose science laboratory and administration block.
The Vice Chancellor Professor Fred Binka mentioned School of Medicine, School of Basic and Biomedical Science, School of Public Health as programmes of the School. Others are School of Nursing and Midwifery, School of Allied Health Science and School of Dentistry. The rest are School of Pharmacy, School of Sports and Exercise Medicine.
Professor Binka also said the University has three Institutes which are the Institute of Traditional and Alternative Medicine, Institute of Medical Education and Institute of Health Research, noting that community health service and problem solving techniques form a core part of the curriculum of the University.
According to the Vice Chancellor, though it has been very challenging to put all the relevant structures in place at the permanent sites, the Ghana Highway Authority, The Ghana Water Company Limited, Urban and Feeder Roads and the Municipal Assemblies have been very instrumental in the design and planning of access roads, pipe lines and laying of cables.
Professor Binka expressed optimism that the programmes at the University will not only help improve the health needs of the region but the country at large. He added that the University is distinctively devoted to teaching, research and service in Health Sciences.
Professor Binka revealed the student population will increase from the current 535 to over 700 students this academic year. Meanwhile, the first batch of students from the University will graduate next year.
A representative of Yanjian Group, the Chinese firm executing the project Pan Yang told Myjoyonline.com there is the urgent need for constant supply of power and water to speed up work on the remaining sites of the project.
