Adomi Bridge repair works progress steadily

Repair works at the Adomi Bridge is progressing steadily Joy News can confirm.

The bridge which links Accra to the Volta Region was closed to traffic a month ago to allow for repair works to be done.

The bridge was built in 1956 over the Volta River and has been of tremendous help to travellers, traders who use the road.

One of the key features of the bridge is the impressive arch which rises from the horizon just like a silver rainbow which approaches from either Akosombo, the Atimpoku Township or from Akwamufie.

The Bridge has not however seen any major renovation since its construction. Last month the Bridge was closed to traffic to allow for some major rehabilitation works to be done on it.

Commuters have since been complaining  about the distress the closure of the bridge have brought to them.

Joy News’ Gifty Andoh Appiah who was guided on a tour of the renovation site said work appears to be progressing steadily.

She said steel decks are being constructed to replace what is currently on the Adomi Bridge. She was taken on the tour by the Project Manager, Dr. Paul Herman and his deputy.

She was also taken to the work field where parts of the bridge had been split for a more thorough work to be done on it.

Dr Herman further explained, it was much safer to demolish the bridge in bits in order to maintain its balance as well as the arch on top of it.

Although the outside the bridge looked good, beneath it, exposed a worrying danger it posed, hence the urgent need for this renovation, Andoh-Appiah reported Dr Herman as saying.

The deputy project manager Ben Tetteh added if well maintained, the bridge which is currently being replaced by steel instead of concrete, could have a life span of about 100 years.

Much diagnostics have not been carried out on the arch supporting the bridge; Dr Herman said it will be cleaned and painted after the renovation by which time any likely problems would have been detected.

The Adomi Bridge serves as the major link between towns across the Volta river as well as a market place for vendors operating in the catchment area.

Those activities have been halted till after about 24 months by which time the renovation is expected to have been completed.
