Lebanon-based Ghanaian midfielder Frank Boateng believes having a salary cap for players in the Ghana Premier League can make it very attractive.
The former Asante Kotoko and Berekum Chelsea player argues that a better pay structures will help retain quality players in the country and hence make the Ghana top-flight very competitive.
The 30-year-old, who plays for topflight side Al-Ijtimahi, stated the obvious that meager salaries received by playrs are the cause of the talent drain in the country.
“I think there should be a policy in place as far as players remuneration are concerned. If this is done, it would go a long way to curtail the exodus of players to other countries,” the former Sporting Mirren captain told Solar FM, based in Dunkwa-On-Offin.
“You don’t expect a player to earn less than $1,000 a month and refuse not to jump at the least overseas opportunity.
“The standard of our league has also suffered when top stars who could add bite to the league leave the shores of the country for greener pastures and so for me, I think there should be a clinic to find ways of addressing these concerns.
“Take countries like South Africa, Angola and Congo DR for instance. They find it very difficult to qualify for the World Cup and yet you see Ghanaian players trooping in there to play in their respective leagues. Why is it so? Why have the likes of Abou Trika, Tshabalala and others not left the leagues of their countries?”
