The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Asuogyaman in the Eastern Region, Kofi Osei-Ameyaw, has sworn the Oath of Allegiance to the chief of the Aflao Traditional Area in the Volta Region, Torgbui Adzangaga Amenya Fiti V, after being installed the development chief of the traditional area a fortnight ago.

Under the stool name, Torgbui Adzagba I (meaning the ‘precious and valuable’ one), Mr. Osei-Ameyaw swore to be a servant of the people at any point in time and promote the development of the Traditional Area and Ketu South as a whole, where his mother hails from.

The colourful ceremony, which took place at the weekend, was attended by chiefs and people from the area, NPP faithful in the region, relations and well-wishers.

The Aflao chief said Osei-Ameyaw was conferred with the title because he is a royal from the Torgbui Agbavi family of Avoeme – the right wing division of the Aflao Traditional Area –  and secondly, as a politician who has achieved so much for himself and also for the people of Asuogyman where the MP’s father comes from.

He expressed the hope that Mr. Osei-Ameyaw’s installation would facilitate development in the area where development has been lacking.

According to Torgbui, the installation of the Asuogyaman MP would greatly help to bridge the gap between the Akwamus or Akans and the Ewes, alongside fosteing unity between the two ethnic groups.

Torgbui Fiti V said a perfect replacement had been found for the late BBC journalist, Komla Dumor, who passed away a couple of months ago, urging Torgbui Adzagba I to impact positively on the youth in the area.

Responding to the huge honour done him, Torbgui Adzagba I expressed gratitude to the chiefs of the area for recognising his efforts and his ability to promote development in the area.

“The future of the Aflao Traditional Area depends on the youth of the land and therefore everything must be done to ensure that the youth are always disciplined in whatever they do,” he said, stressing that the youth must be discouraged from negative activities like violence, armed robbery and idleness.

He promised to initiate programmes that would bring development to the area as he had done in the Asuogyaman constituency.

He said he was going to build a multi-purpose resource centre with a seed money of GH¢20,000 and 1,000 bags of cement.

“The construction of the resource centre will definitely create employment for the youth of the area,” he said.

He invited architects who come from the area to come and enter a competition by drawing a plan for the proposed centre that would comprise a clinic, shops and conference centres, adding that the overall winner would be rewarded with GH¢5,000.

The woman organiser of the NPP in the Volta Region, Aku Sika Nkansah, decorated Torgbui Fiti with specially made beads at the ceremony to thank him for taking such a bold and progressive initiative to unite Ewes and Akans and also installing an NPP MP as development chief for the traditional area.

She told the DAILY GUIDE that the recognition of Mr. Osei-Ameyaw by the chiefs and people Aflao as a development-oriented politician would help boost the image of the NPP in the Volta Region.
