President of the ECOWAS Commission, Kadré Désiré Ouedraogo says the war against terrorism in the West African sub-region can only be won through good governance and eradication of youth unemployment.

He acknowledged that the war against terrorism will “certainly be won through military actions; nonetheless, the long term solution to fighting terrorism is economic development and youth employment.”

Mr. Ouedraogo was addressing heads of state at the 44th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Heads of State and government on going in Ivory Coast.

The two-day summit will see the heads of state discussing a wide range of issues related to greater integration, transformation and prosperity.

Addressing the ECOWAS heads of states, Mr. Kadré Désiré Ouedraogo cited the activities of Boko Haram in Nigeria which has killed thousands of Nigerians over the years.

He said: “The atrocities of the Boko Haram sect in northern Nigeria that we strongly condemn is indeed a stack reminder of the need to embark on some preparation efforts at the regional level.”

According to him, democracy and the respect of human dignity is another avenue through which governments can combat terrorism.

He called for the deepening of regional integration “while giving due attention to peace and stability.”
