The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hannah Tetteh says President John Dramani Mahama is poised for the task ahead as the chairman of ECOWAS.

The President was elected unanimously as the new chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of heads of state and government for a one-year term.

The President who takes over from President Alassane Ouattara of La Cote d’Ivoire is expected to oversee a number of key issues in the West African sub-region including the signing of the controversial Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) with the European Union (EU).

Speaking to the media after his election, Ms Tetteh said the President “will be in charge of shepherding the integration agenda for year going forward.”

President Mahama’s election means meetings of ECOWAS will be hosted in Ghana and other member states.

Ms Tetteh stated that the President “was very grateful for the confidence that his colleagues reposed on him and he assured them that he will do everything possible to maintain the trust and confidence that has been reposed in him with this position.”
