The National Democratic Party (NDP) has indicated it will not enter into any alliance with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the 2016 elections.

This follows a call by the Chairman of the Nigerian branch of the NPP,  Kofi Atiemo-Gyan, that the leadership of the NPP initiate talks with the NDP and other opposition parties to form an alliance to wrestle power from the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking to Citi News, the Communication Director of the NDP, Ernest Owusu Bempah said the party will contest the 2016 elections on its own.

He explained that the NDP’s ideology differs from that of the NPP adding that the party’s 2012 flagbearer, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings “will be contesting the 2016 elections and she is also looking out to win the presidential seat.”

Mr. Bempah discounted assertions that when parties form an alliance for general elections, they are very likely to win the election.

“It is not a matter of parties ganging up to form an alliance; it’s about our party going out there to win the 2016 elections,” he said.

According to him, if only the chairman of the Electoral Commission, Afari Gyan “doesn’t start his diabolical agenda again and prevent Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings’ face from appearing on the paper,” the NDP will win the elections.
