Tema Motorway repair works completed

Repair works on the broken down bridge on the Accra-Tema Motorway has been completed, the Roads and Highways Minister has confirmed, finishing four weeks ahead of schedule.

Repair works were expected to be completed in five weeks.

Speaking on Citi FM , Tuesday morning, Alhaji Amidu Sulemani, the Minister for Roads and Highways said, “My checks with the Chief Executive of the Highways Authority (GHA) have confirmed that the bridge has been opened to traffic.”

He explained that the initial plan was to remove the whole concrete works on the portion of the bride and recast it, adding that, “when you cast concrete it has to take four weeks to cure but along the line we realized that it wasn’t that severe so we decided that they should remove part of it and put a metal plate across it which will still service it …”

A huge pothole was discovered on one of the lanes on the Accra-Tema Motorway, prompting the GHA to close part of the bridge to traffic from Tema to Accra for repair works.

As an interim measure to manage the vehicular traffic, the GHA created a diversion near the bridge, which is close to the Old Accra Abattoir.

Meanwhile, five companies have expressed interest to finance the reconstruction of the 19-kilometre Accra-Tema Motorway http://graphic.com.gh/news/general-news/19663-5-companies-interested-in-rebuilding-tema-motorway.html on a public-private partnership basis.
