Ho, March 24, GNA – Teacher-trainees in the Volta Region on Monday expressed frustration over alleged machinations by Conference of Principals of Teacher Training Colleges (PRINCOF) in the region to disrupt a planned demonstration in Ho today.

The intended countrywide demonstration on Monday, March 24, 2014 was to protest the scrapping of the teacher trainees allowance.

Addressing a press conference, Mr Prosper Shittie, Volta Region Sector President of Teacher -Trainees Association of Ghana, said it was unfortunate that they could not join their colleagues following instructions from PRINCOF in the region warning trainees against participating in the demonstration.

He described the action of PRINCOF in the region as undemocratic and denial of the right to express their grievances.

We have duly notified the Police as prescribed by law and have been granted permit for a peaceful walk to air our concerns…we have also written to various authorities including PRINCOFF and taken aback by this, Mr Shittie lamented.

He said leadership of teacher-trainees in the region had also made financial commitments to convey trainees from the seven colleges of education in the region for the Ho demonstration and said PRINCOFs action was detrimental to the social transformation and development of our country.

Mr Shittie attributed the situation to rules in colleges of education which required students to obtain permission to leave campus and questioned the appropriateness of such regulations in a tertiary institution.

He said irrespective of the botched demonstration, leadership of teacher-trainees would present a petition to the Volta Regional Minister.

A petition signed by Mr Mohammed Amin Nasiru, National President, Teacher -Trainees Association of Ghana made available to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) said teacher- trainees were disappointed in governments intransigent position over the scrapping of allowance for teacher- trainees irrespective of appeals from major stakeholders.

It therefore called on the President to restore allowances for the trainees immediately so they could pay their feeding fees and other bills.

It will not be in the interest of our dear nation for this allowance scheme to be scrapped…, the petition stated.
