Lordina Widows Association of Ghana, an NGO operating in the Brong Ahafo and Northern regions whose objectives are to foster unity among widows, create awareness for widows and support them in times of need, has been inaugurated in Techiman in the Brong Ahafo Region.

Speaking at the function, Hajia Jaara Abdullah Kamara, the chairperson of the association said widows are the most disadvantaged in society. She said in some cases, they are subjected to inhuman treatment in the name of custom and later left to fend for themselves. She said unlike married women who live with their husbands, widows are forced to work around the clock in order to get three-square meals a day for their children and themselves.

Hajia Jaara said widows are sometimes raped by unscrupulous men who take advantage of the nonexistence of their husbands. She appealed to society to contribute their quota to the NGO so that it could serve members by providing food items, clothes and educating orphans.

According to Hajia Jaara, the association had so far registered 912 widows in Buipe, 535 members at Bole and 215 members at Techiman.

Hajia Jaara made a passionate appeal to the First Lady, Madam Lordina Mahama to support the NGO because her name has been associated with   the poor and needy since she became the First Lady of Ghana.

In her view God richly blessed anyone who helped a widow in any small way and hoped the First Lady would be the first to contribute her widow’s mite to the NGO.
