Drivers in Kumasi protest police arrests and extortions

Hundreds of commuters have been left stranded by floating commercial bus operators in the Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi.

The bus operators are not picking any passengers this morning.

They say the action is in protest against arbitrary police arrests and extortion of money.

According to Luv FM’s Prince Appiah, many bus stops in the city are swarming with frustrated commuters who can’t get to work because of the protests.

The protesting drivers say they have been forced to embark on the action because the police arrest them when they drop and pick up passengers at bus stops.

They accuse the police of harassment and extortion, the reason for Monday’s suspension of services.

Prince Appiah said the police were on hand to control the crowds and urge calm.
