The Director of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department, ACP Angwugutoge Awuni has directed divisional and district commanders to close down all unapproved lorry stations within their jurisdiction.

He said most of the drivers have converted bus stops and other curves into their lorry stations.

‘Some of the drivers even use intersections as their stations thereby causing vehicular traffic while most of their passengers are being killed as a result of that.’

He gave transport unions up to the end of April to provide appropriate stations and parking space for their members.

ACP Angwubutoge made this known when the MTTD met stakeholders of the various transport unions and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to discuss unlawful siting of lorry stations and parks in Accra.

‘Some areas used as lorry parks by the drivers are very wrong and need not be entertained.

‘The police have also detected that most of these unapproved lorry stations have permits from the AMA, municipal assemblies to operate even though where they are located causes vehicular traffic.’

Sam Areh Dartey, the Metro Coordinating Director of AMA, in a statement, said drivers of vehicles that use the various bus stops as their lorry stations do not belong to unions.

He debunked assertion that AMA issues permits to driver unions to operate without inspecting the places initially.
