New stores for Tamale market

The Metropolitan Chief Executive of Tamale, Hanan Gundadow Abdul-Rahman, has cut the sod for the commencement of work on new stores at the Tamale Central Market.

The two-storey facility would contain 40 stores each and will  be completed within a period of six months.

He also announced that a new market would be constructed at Kakpagyili and Lamashegu, both suburbs of Tamale, to decongest the central business district.

Mr Abdul-Rahman explained that “these initiatives have been put in place to facilitate private sector development plans that will stimulate investment and business growth in order to reposition the metropolis as the fulcrum of development in the north.”

He added that it would also position Tamale as a competitive commercial city linking the area to Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger.

“I am equally happy that the project, when completed, will not only give a facelift to the market but also add up to the aesthetic value of the fast growing metropolis,” the mayor stated.

Some of the traders have described the project as a good initiative and expressed the hope that it would be completed on schedule. “I also appeal to the authorities to extend the facelift to the entire market to ensure the free movement of goods and people,” Hajia Fulera Iddi entreated.

For his part, Alhaji Musah Hassan asked the authorities of the TAMA to also fast track work on the abandoned supermarket at Aboabo which President John Mahama recently promised to ensure its completion.

“Tamale is fast growing and, therefore, we need to expand our market centres to contain the increasing number of traders in the system for business to flourish to grow our local economy,” he further indicated.

The mayor, in his response, observed that all such initiatives would not yield the desired impact if peace was not sustained in all parts of the metropolis.

He, therefore, cautioned the youth in the area to guard against conducts that disturbed the prevailing harmony in the area.

He also indicated that the assembly would take all the necessary measures to prevent further interruption of peace and also to ensure that the perpetrators in the recent pockets of disturbances in the metropolis were duly brought to book.
