The Ministry of Education has requested the Council of the University of Ghana to , as a matter of urgency, submit a report that informed the university’s decision to regulate access to its premises.
The ministry also asked the Council to submit “a specific report on the new guidelines that informed its thought processes to check security, collect tolls and control traffic at the university”.
“The Minister of Education expects that the report is submitted latest by Friday, March 21, 2014,” it stated.
Speaking to the Daily Graphic in Accra Tuesday after issuing a statement requesting the University’s Council to submit the report, the Deputy Minister of Education in charge of the Tertiary Sector, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, stated that “When we get the report, we will study it to know the next line of action to take”.
“Per subsection 26 (3) of the Act, the minister shall within one month after the receipt of the annual report, submit the report to Parliament with a statement that the minister considers necessary,” he stated. Council failed to submit report
He said that the Act of the university also required that the Council submitted a report within eight months after the end of each academic year, saying that “per this requirement, the Council should have submitted the report to the minister by the end of February, 2014 but the university has defaulted as of March”.
“The Council submitted the 2011/2012 academic report to the Minister of Education but it has not done so for the 2012/2013 academic year,” he said.
