Six-month-old baby abandoned at KATH

A six-month-old baby has been abandoned at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

After her baby had been referred to the Neurosurgery Department for the treatment of hydrocephalus, the mother of the baby, Faustina Ayampoka, dropped her baby on the floor and took to her heels.

According to Mrs Philomena Nyarko Saim the Deputy Director of Nursing Services at the Pediatric Emergency Unit (PEU) of KATH, at about  6.00 a.m. yesterday, some workers of the Social Welfare Department of the KATH chanced upon the baby on the floor of consulting room nine and sent it to the PEU.

She said the workers also found a polythene bag containing a photocopy of Faustina’s National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) card, the baby’s weighing, health insurance and out-patient’s department (OPD) cards, clothes and a bowl of porridge.

Mrs Saim indicated that the abandoned baby was born at the Manhyia Government Hospital and referred to the Mother and Baby Unit of KATH for treatment.

She added  that it was from that unit that the baby was further referred to a neuro-surgeon, but the mother abandoned the baby.

She further indicated that the records found on the baby showed that

Faustina was resident at Moshie Zongo in Kumasi.
It is believed that Faustina abandoned the baby because of  her inability to foot the medical bill for her baby.
