ROT AT KATH: How Bribery & Corruption Is The Order Of The Day

A weak and ineffective CEO, a medical staff of surgeons and anesthetists divided into various interest groups, bribery, corruption and nepotism are the order of the day at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, the ‘Daily Post’ reports.

So, when Dr. Adom Gyedu, a surgeon recently refused to operate on one Solomon Mensah, a patient with strangulated inguinal hernia, a dire medical emergency, which eventually led to the patient’s untimely death, he knew he would have the support of a section of the surgeons and Anesthetics there and thus absolved of blame.

The first person he dashed therefore to was the Head of the Surgery Department, Prof. Michael Ohene Yeboah who, quiet against the rules of the profession, ordered post mortem to be conducted on the body. Thus, the attempt at cover-up began.

‘Daily Post, can reveal that Dr. Gyedu iniquities at the hospital are quite frightening. For instance it is trite knowledge that he was once forced to pay back illegal money he collected from a patient he operated on. The patient died soon after surgery.

Dr. Gyedu is currently battling with another issue of a patient who is fighting for survival after developing serious complications after surgery. This patient who is a nurse, was directed to Dr. Gyedu by one of Dr. Gyedu’s friends to Dr. Gyedu. Dr. Gyedu, notwithstanding his friendship with the referring doctor, and in spite of the status of the patient as a nurse, charged and took illegal fees from the patient to the bewilderment of the referring doctor.

The case of Solomon Mensah is thus just the latest of his iniquities. Many are apprehensive that with the support of a clique at the hospital, he will get off the hook and pose a danger to other patients.

Already, the Head of Department of Anesthesia is actively working to cover up Dr. Gyedu’s iniquities. Intelligence picked up indicates he has refused to submit the nurse anesthetics reports on the Solomon Mensah tragedy to the CEO because the report is damning of Dr. Gyedu.

The nurse anesthetics, a chap called James tried to convince Dr. Gyedu to operate on Solomon Mensah but the surgeon refused. This led to hot exchanges between them.

The rot at KATH is traceable to the doorsteps of the CEO, Prof. Ohene Adjei. Rather than clear the mess that is engulfing the hospital, intel picked up by the paper indicates that he has contacted the BNI to help him trace the Daily Post’s sources at the KATH.

He is part of the nepotism that has taken a stranglehold of the hospital. He appointed his friend’s widow as Administrative officer of the Surgery Department. The woman’s arrogance is said to be the first thing one notices about her. The Director of Administration of the hospital has appointed his nephew as Business Manager of the Surgery Department.

The CEO, the Director of Administration and the Administrative Officer have all looked on while the Department of Pathology which is believed to be the backbone of the hospital is left in shambles.
