A twenty-five-year-old chainsaw operator at Akyem Abenaso, who allegedly shot dead an 18-year-old taxi driver and stole his taxi, was yesterday remanded in prison custody by the Oda District Court.
The accused, Victor Amewugah, whose plea was not taken, will reappear before the court, presided over by Mr Albert Annoh-Owusu on May 29, 2014.
The facts of the case as presented by the prosecutor, Detective Inspector Fabian Sallah, were that, around 12 noon on March 8, 2014, Amewugah chartered the taxi with registration number AS 6317-12, driven by the late Emmanuel Obeng-Asante from Oda to Essam in the Birim Central municipality.
On reaching Essam, Amewugah told the taxi driver to take him to his village, about three kilometres away. On the way, Amewugah signalled Obeng-Asante to stop for him to get off the taxi. Shooting
After getting off the taxi, Amawugah picked his luggage, including a pump action gun which was concealed under a bag of sachet water. Amewugah removed the gun from the bag and pointed it at the driver, who sensing danger, took to his heels but Amewugah pursued him and shot him in the chest after he had fallen down, killing him instantly.
After murdering Obeng-Asante, Amewugah stole his taxi and started using it. Arrest
The Oda police sent a message about the missing taxi driver and his vehicle to police stations across the country.
Following the police information, the Abomosu police in the Eastern Region arrested Amewugah on March 13, 2014, while he was driving the taxi and sent him to Oda.
The Oda Divisional Police Commander, Chief Supt James Sarfo-Peprah, said during interrogation by the Oda Divisional Police Command, Amewugah confessed killing Obeng-Asante and stealing his taxi.
He later led the police to the spot in the bush where he killed the taxi driver.
Meanwhile, the police have released the decomposing body of Obeng-Asante to his family at Akyem Manso for burial.
