Matilda Payne, a fashion/interior designer may not be a household name among the entrepreneurial fraternity but is gradually muscling her way to the top.

The bead maker, operating under the brand name ‘Matilda Haute Couture’, has carved a niche for herself, and as result, drawn the attention of local and international top-notch celebrities.

Matilda is the brain behind the gorgeous and resplendent locally manufactured jewellery worn by Kojo Antwi, Rita Marley, Menaye Muntari as well as provided the interior décor for the premiere of Marley movie.

In an informal exhibition at the African Regent Hotel in Accra last Friday which attracted friends and close relations like Mrs Rocklyn Antwi, Matilda pointed out that she was driven by her passion to support the environment.

To her, the quest by the current generation to go green had also impacted in her works resulting in her buying into the recycling philosophy.

Among the many attractive handiworks of Matilda Haute Couture include a specially designed sofa made of used car tyres, necklace made of broken bottles, among several used materials.

‘We are going green and we esteem recycling, hence our quest to create something from used materials.

‘I started in 2000 with clothes because of my background as a textile student. I read a lot about textiles and did serious mentoring. My business partner, Yaw Opoku Appiah, and two others have teamed up so well and as a result, birthed another outfit; ‘Matilda African Collectibles’ which focuses on extra ordinary artifacts and décor.

‘Five years from now, we have targeted mentoring as many students as possible by establishing workshop where we will run short courses for free for them. Doing so will certainly reduce the unemployment menace confronting the nation.

‘We consider this as giving back to society. Kojo Antwi and the wife Rocklyn, Deputy Tourism Minister, Dzifa Gomashie, Pascaline Edwards are some of my biggest clients. We did the home décor for Rita Marley at her Konkonuru base in the Eastern Region,’ she added.

‘Matilda Haute Couture’ operates from Trade Fair Centre, La-Accra in front of Pavilion D.
