Security in Tamale increased after clashes

GHANA-VOTE-RESULTThe Northern Regional Minister, Bede Anwataasumo Ziedeng has indicated that the police has increased the security measures in Tamale to ensure that calm is restored to the area.

Speaking on Eyewitness News, the Minister explained that “we have reviewed the situation and from tonight, we are going to have joint-military patrol in Tamale till we have achieved complete normalcy in the area.”

A youth group suspected to be supporters of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Tamale reportedly attacked Tamale based Radio Justice and destroyed property belonging to the station.

Sources on the ground reported that they went there to attack the deputy Secretary to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for Tamale central constituency , Ahmed Faisal  who featured on the station’s newspaper review discussion program onTuesday March 11, 2014.

The attack on the radio station has been attributed to the comment made by Mr. Faisal on the death of one Mustapha Abdul Rashid, who was killed on Monday 11, 2014.

He was killed near the Tamale Aboabo forest by people suspected to members of the NPP Kandaha Boys.

The Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Ebenezer Tetteh further explained that the “comments made by the Ahmed Faisal concerning the death of  Rashid did not go down well with the residents of the area who decided to attack the station.”

“A motorbike was completely burnt, and wind screen was also smashed. They also attempted burning the whole building, but for the timely intervention of the police, Fire Service and the Military they couldn’t carry out the action,” he added.

Meanwhile, three people have been arrested in connection with the attack.
