A group calling itself Friends of Abodakpi have called on Ghana’s High Commissioner to Malaysia, Mr Dan Abodakpi, to contest the national chairmanship position of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) when the party opens its nominations.
They have consequently called on the party members to use the opportunity to change the leadership and hand over the management into the hands of people who will transform the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“We demand a change of leadership that will bring about the needed transformation of the party and increase the party membership drive and bring back the die-hard spirit of its members,” the group said.
In a statement signed by the Ashanti Regional Co-ordinator, Mr Samuel Otu, Mr Abodakpi was described as a leader who would pay attention to members of the NDC, initiate and execute programmes that would involve all and sundry.
The statement said among all the aspirants (for the NDC Chairmanship position), Mr Abodakpi stood out because “he has the qualities to turn the fortunes of the party round if given the chance.”
Mr Abodakpi was the Member of Parliament for Keta and doubled as the Minister of Trade and Industry during the Rawlings Administration.
Although they have officially not declared their intention to contest the position, Dr Kwabena Adjei, the incumbent Chairman of the NDC; Mr Kofi Portuphy, the National Co-ordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and Mr Abodakpi are testing the waters before staking their claim.
The group believes that with his vast experience in the party, ranging from being a cadre, a minister of state, MP and currently a high commissioner, Mr Abodapki would appreciate the concerns of the ordinary party members and offer support.
