Shoemaker To Spend 12 Years In Jail

The Kumasi-Based-Gender Court presided over by Mrs Rita Agyeman-Budu on Tuesday sentenced a shoemaker accused of defiling a minor to 12 years imprisonment in hard labour.

Nicholas Oppong, 22, had sexually abused his nine-year old victim at the Pankrono Estate in Kumasi. His conviction came after he pleaded guilty.

Police Chief Inspector Philip Yao Bebli told the court that the Oppong and the victim, a primary three pupil, lived in the same neighbourhood.

Under the pretext of sending the little girl to buy him something, he lured her to his room on February 25 at about 1500 hours and sexually assaulted her.

The prosecution said the victim informed the mother, a trader, of her painful and traumatic experience after she returned home at the close of her routine business.

The woman made a formal report to the Police Domestic Violence and Victims’ Support Unit (DOVVSU) at Tafo-Pankrono and he was arrested.
