The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Elizabeth Ofosu Adjare has made a passionate appeal to musicians in the country to foster unity and eschew divisive tendencies.
She said while there are bound to be disagreements in any organisation or group of people, musicians must find a common ground to work together to enhance the growth for the industry.
The minister made the call in an address to launch the 2014 edition of the Ghana Music Week (GMW) Festival at the National Theatre Tuesday.
Her call comes in the wake of internecine bickering between several musicians in the country with the feud between Samini and Shatta Wale reaching a crisis point.
Elizabeth Ofosu Adjare said: “Let me add my voice to calls for unity on the music front. The saying that united we stand, but divided we fall cannot be over emphasized and I’m passionate about this.”
She stressed that: “It is imperative that all musicians unite for the good of your industry, our industry. You are definitely free to disagree but unite you must.”
The minister reaffirmed government’s support for the music industry stating, “The ministry will work closely with MUSIGA to actualize its theme of positioning Ghana’s music as the heartbeat for tourism promotion.”
“Tourism is currently one of the biggest foreign exchange earners and I’m convinced that the marriage of music and tourism will certainly produce tremendous benefits for our nation,” she added.
The 2014 edition of the festival kicked off on Monday, March 3 with the Ghana Music Day.
Other activities lined up for this year’s event include, a stakeholders’ forum on March 4, Ghana Music Honours on March 5, a musical concert on March 6, and a music business workshop on March 7.
Tuesday’s launch was also attended by several personalities including, Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) president, Bice Osei Kuffour (Obour), Kofi Asamoah of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Diana Hopeson, former president of MUSIGA, and Mike Gizo, former Minister of Tourism and Paramount Chief of Shai Traditional Area.
