DAN ABODAKPI, former Member of Parliament (MP) for Keta Constituency in the Volta Region, has been asked to join the National Chairmanship race of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
This is because the “NDC today needs a leader with innovation” as the party “needs to be rebranded, re-strategized and reorganised to meet the current political dispensation,” the Friends of Abodakpi (FOA) has said.
Samuel Otu, Ashanti Regional Coordinator of FOA, said bad leadership style had led to several complaints of neglect by grassroots members of the NDC, asserting that the party’s principles, ideologies, philosophies were gradually dying out.
According to him, the current leadership had made the NDC to lose focus and direction, deviating from the principle of probity and accountability, as a result of “some selfish behaviour of others.”
Speaking at a press conference in Kumasi, Mr. Otu indicated that the time had come for the incumbent chairman, Dr. Kwabena Adjei to hand over the baton to someone with rich experience to prepare the NDC to meet the changing trend of the country’s political system.
The FOA coordinator said he and his members considered Mr. Abodakpi as the one to bring about transformation to the party through initiatives that could increase the numbers for the NDC.
“We need a leader who will initiate programmes to draw his grassroots members closer; a leader whose initiation can increase NDC victory margins from three to 10 percent,” he stressed, and continued that “this is very important” for the party.
For him, Mr. Dan Abodakpi, who is a former Trade Minister in the erstwhile Rawlings regime is the most trusted person for the party’s job and would pay attention to all members of the umbrella family.
“We demand a change of leadership that will bring about the needed transformation of the party and Dan is our best hope to improve the NDC,” FOA Ashanti Regional Coordinator said.
The group wants Abodakpi to offer himself for the contest of the chairmanship slot to prepare the party for the 2016 general elections.
