The Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Tema Regional Police Command recorded an estimated 400 per cent reduction in road accidents for the year 2013.
“This margin has never been achieved for years.”
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Maxwell Atingane, Tema Regional police Commander, said this at the end of year get together for the year 2013, of the Tema Regional Police Command, popularly known as WASSA.
He said the strong police presence within the metropolis, increased speed checks and sensitization of road users, had mainly contributed to the improvement.
Touching on crime, the Tema Regional Police Commander said statistics for the year 2013, compared to previous years also showed a steep decline.
The Metropolis recorded 17,385 crime cases for the year 2010, 16,662 in 2011, 13,017 in 2012, and 7,714 for the year 2013, DCOP Atingane said.
“The highway patrol teams on the motorway were able to make that stretch a no go area for robbers, who have terrorized motorists on the motorway in the past,” he said, adding that, the police were also successful on the eastern corridor and the Aflao stretch.
The Tema Regional Police Commander said it was unfortunate that at the end of the year 2013, “we recorded some murder and robbery cases which received high media attention”.
“The police however apprehended the perpetrators of those heinous crimes, and these accused persons are before the courts.”
The Tema Regional Police commander congratulated the Police personnel for a good job done, and encouraged them to continue working hard.
“I want you to remember that, service to man is service to God. Therefore your reward awaits you in heaven. Continue putting in your best and be more professional,” said DCOP Atingane.
A number of police personnel were given awards for their outstanding performance during the year 2013.
