I’ll Work For NPP — Harouna Maiga

An aspirant for the position of National Nasara Coordinator of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming national executive election, Mr Harouna Maiga, has pledged to improve on the performance of the party in the Muslim-dominated zongo communities across the country when elected.

He said the Danquah-Busia-Dombo tradition, which gave birth to the NPP, enjoyed a good relationship with the people of the zongos and that historical fact could form a basis for the party to begin the process of reconciliation with the people of the zongos.

Maiga, in an interview after the balloting for placement which he took the sixth position on the ballot paper, stated that the present performance of the NDC within the zongo communities was artificial and cosmetic because the NDC was only riding on the back of propaganda and political patronage.

‘’My election as the next NPP Nasara Coordinator would end the dominance of the NDC and begin a real process of reconciliation between the NPP and the people of the zongos’’, Mr Maiga reiterated

He said as a Nasara Coordinator, his administration would regularly engage the chiefs, opinion leaders, Imams and the youth activists in the zongo communities with the objective of winning the hearts and minds of the people in order to restore the old relationship and become more receptive and tolerant to the messages of the NPP.

He said the fact that NPP was the first and only political party to have produced a Muslim in the person of the late Alhaji Aliu Mahama as Vice-President of the Republic of Ghana demonstrated the party’s affection for the people of the zongos.

Furthermore, he said, while in office, the Kufuor-Mahama administration implemented some social intervention programmes such as the National Health Insurance Scheme, capitation grant, free maternal health care, mass transportation system, free bus ride for school pupils among others, to alleviate the suffering of the most-deprived and vulnerable citizens living in the slums and densely populated areas.

“Voting for the NPP in subsequent elections is one of the ways for the zongos to express appreciation and I will deliver on this promise come Election 2016’’, Maiga stressed.

He, therefore, called on all constituency and regional Nasara Coordinators of the NPP forming the electoral college to elect a coordinator and vote massively for him by endorsing his slogan of, “Vote Maiga, Change Nasara’’.
