Drainage projects abandoned in some parts of Dansoman in Accra are choked with solid waste and stagnant water, serving as breeding grounds for mosquitoes and exposing residents to avoidable health risks.
The residents are also contending with unparalleled vehicular nuisance due to heaps of sand placed in the middle of the roads, blocking the entrances of some houses.
A retired Army Commander, Aggrey Fynn, has been “imprisoned” close to three weeks now, due to heaps of sand dislodged right in front of the entrance to his house, as well as a deep trench dug in-front of it preventing him from moving his car.
This came to light when Ms Ursula Owusu, Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West went round with journalists to parts of the constituency on Friday to have a first-hand information on how the apparently abandoned project were affecting residents.
The tour, which covered the SSNIT Flat, Otojor, Opetequaye, Tunga Down, Control Down and Ebenezer Down, all suburbs of Dansoman, revealed estate developers putting up structures on waterways and on major roads, making drainage construction extremely difficult.
The situation have put fear in residents, who say their lives are in danger in the event of any flash floods, since work on the projects are at a standstill.
They are also suffocating from the stench emanating from packs of refuse dumped at unauthorised places and swampy areas, blocking the water ways.
Ms Owusu however assured the residents of their safety and pledged to meet the Roads and Highways Minister and the Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly to ensure that the right things were done to protect lives and property.
She also advised the people to seek the right building permits to avoid building on water ways and the demolition of their houses.
