The President’s nominee for District Chief Executive (DCE) for Kumbungu in the Northern Region, Alhaji Iddi Manzah Mahama, was finally on Wednesday endorsed by members of the assembly.

It was gathered that the former government appointees were not in support of the nominee and as such, had to be fired and replaced with new ones who were immediately sworn into office.

Even with the new appointments, the nominee narrowly escaped being rejected, as 23 assembly members voted for him against   13, to secure the mandatory two-thirds majority to be confirmed.

Northern Regional Minister, Bede Zedeng, who endorsed the dismissal of the former government appointees, said in an address that they were mandated to be loyal to the president, saying that was the reason for their engagement.

He could not fathom why appointees by the president could reject a colleague, betraying their loyalty, and urged assembly members to vote for the nominee.

The Minister urged them to consider the nominee for the sake of development, expressing worry about the negative media reports associated with the confirmation.

President John Mahama, in accordance with Article 243(1) of the 1992 Constitution and Section 20(1) of the Local Government Act 1993 (Act 462) about three weeks ago, nominated Alhaji Iddi Manzah Mahama, Daniel Osei and John Nurudeen Ahortu as DCEs for Kumbungu, Asante Akyem North and Ada East respectfully.

All three have since been confirmed by their respective district assemblies amidst controversies and criticisms.
